Hyundai, Volvo announce recalls in China

By Joanne Jiu   From:Gasgoo.com February 04, 2008

Shanghai. February 4 (Gasgoo.com) – Beijing Hyundai announced yesterday to recall 2,106 locally-produced Sonata sedans due to a potential fuel leak problem; meanwhile Volvo AB announced to 1,502 S40 sedans imported to Chinese market, local media reported today.

Hyundai's recall is tied to an unqualified charcoal canister filter on the fuel tank, which may lead to a clog in the filter and finally result in crack or leak in the tank, Beijing Hyundai explained in its recall announcement.

Volvo's problem is related to a flaw with fuel pump electronic modules (PEM), which monitors the fuel pump. The PEMs on the problematic cars may cause corrosion when driving in salty or moist weather conditions, which may result in greater accident probability, the company said in a statement.

Beijing Hyundai's recall starts on January 4, while Volvo will ask the car owners to replace the flawed components starting 22 January. Volvo's recall in China is part of its global efforts to fix a total of 82,000 problematic S40s and V50s.

Beijing Hyundai's recall affects Sonata vehicles made between January 1, 2003 and July 12, 2004, and Volvo's recall affects S40 and V50 made between Sept 15, 2004 and Aug 22, 2005.

Beijing Hyundai currently produces and sells five models in China, including the Sonata, Sonata Yuxiang, Elantra, Accent and Tucson. It'll add three new models this year.
